3-D PAPER ARTIST

Since I was awarded a blue ribbon for my finger painting in kindergarten, I have considered myself an artist. I always drew, painted and cut and glued paper. I have taught art in kindergarten through high school and worked as an arts coordinator for PGCPS. Now that I’m retired from education, I have more time for my own art. I have worked with a variety of mediums and now my work consists of paper painted with acrylics that I use to create three dimensional reliefs, stand-alone sculptures and sculptural books.

The materials I use are recycled- paper discarded by a printing company or pages from discarded books as well a bindings from old books and cardboard cereal boxes which are painted, cut, folded and glued together to create these three-dimensional paintings. Paint is splashed, dripped and stamped on each sheet, then they are cut, folded, and glued. Frames are from thrift stores or old pictures.

This innovative, refreshing process is lots of fun; I believe that each sheet of paper is unique and beautiful by itself. I cut, fold, and glue the papers to create art showing what I see around me or mental images of objects or places.

Frank Stella said, “Painting does not want to be confined-it needs room to move and breathe.” Inspired by Stella’s paintings, my three-dimensional works contain a space and fullness that bring them to life. My art is my work, everyday I paint and cut paper, make paintings, have work framed, buy supplies, and/or look for places to exhibit. I consider myself a senior citizen emerging artist with a unique process, style and product worthy of the art world’s attention. I am just beginning.

*Since entering my first show (3/8/19), my work has been accepted in shows in  Washington D.C. and Maryland and I am continuing to look for places to exhibit.
